About the event
Don’t worry, if you are not quite ready for this swim, will we do it again. Please join us before for our regular Swim Open Waters coached session at Venture Cove from 7:00am -8:00am.
We will meet at 8:00am in Ventura Cove for the start of the swim.
We will break people up into pods based on their pace, and assign one support volunteer per pod to lead the channel crossing. Once across, a single kayak support will guide the swim and other kayak support volunteers will slowly follow along as people begin swimming. I highly recommend staying with your pod during your swim.
Swimmers need to stay on the inside (island/beach side) of the kayaks, about 25 yards offshore. There will be a kayak at the back of the group, and others spread throughout as needed. Swimmers need to follow the direction of the kayaks closest to them, but will set their own speed.
Once you get around the island, please be prepared to wait for a kayaker to help you cross the channel and back into the bay. We will end the swim where we started.
The purpose of our kayakers and SUP volunteers is to INCREASE SWIMMER VISABLITY. Wear bright colors.
Support volunteers, please be prepared to have your cell phone on you (I will bring some ziplock bags). We can communicate via messenger chat or text, my cell phone number is 619-876-7617.
In the event of an emergency, where a swimmer cannot continue, encourage the pod of swimmers to continue swimming and immediately contact another kayaker to drop back. Have your swimmer safely get onto the island and someone can come and pick them up.
Keep an eye out for boats, crew, fisherman and their pole lines.
Please bring an extra tow buoy or life vest if you have it.
The water temperature is going to be between 65-68F.
Tow buoys, and brightly colored caps are highly recommended.
Please contact Sidney privately if you have questions or concerns about the water temperature or distance.
If you are UNSURE about this swim, DO NOT DO IT.
Instead, please join us at 7am for the regular group circuit workout. To take part in this island swim, you MUST feel comfortable swimming 4000 yards without stopping, and have been recently swimming in the ocean.
Again, YOU ARE RESPONIBLE FOR YOURSELF.
Everyone participating will be required to sign a liability waver.
